Shark

Sharks are the man eaters of the water. We have many species of shark here in the Gulf of Mexico. Some of the more common ones are “Tiger Shark,” “Bull Shark,” “Hammerhead Shark,” “Dusky Shark,” “Nurse Shark,” “Sand Shark,” “Black Tip Shark,” and several others. YES we do have “Great Whites.” Not as plentiful as all of the others, but they do live here from time to time. The waters are too warm here for the Great White, but are perfect for a whole array of other species. Sharks have been around since the beginning of time. They are probably here because they migrate each year now for millions of years from our Gulf of Mexico’s warm waters to the more tropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. Overfishing has been an issue for years and the National Marine Fisheries have restricted fishing efforts in the Gulf of Mexico to improve the fish population and insure a balance of nature. We used to catch these prehistoric creatures and bring them back to the dock to leave on display for everyone to “oooh” and “ahhh” at, but now we take pictures and release these fish back into the wild to try to help with the restoration effort.
